Some past projects of the Salem Kiwanis Club;

First Project: Courthouse Clock – the clock was later moved to the City Hall in 1952, and sold in 1972 when the City Hall was razed. It is now on display in Mt. Angel.

Sponsored building of first concrete bridges in Salem.
Fund drive for Willamette University endowment – club raised over $500,000.
Fund drive for YMCA raising approximately $200,000 for new building.
Salem General Hospital Improvement Fund Drive – raised nearly $100,000.
In 1937, we helped organize the first Community Chest Drive now known as the United Way.
Assisted addition of high school classes at Chemawa Indian School.
Promotion of Silver Falls area as a State Park.
Hosted three District Conventions.
In 1961, we initiated all night high school graduation parties and chaperoned them at the YMCA.
Contributed to a Health Cabin at Camp Kilowan Camp Fire in 1963.
Sponsored the annual Kiwanis Kids Day Parade in Salem with over 1,000 kids and 9,000 entries in poster contest.
Sponsored Boy Scout Troop and twenty-three campships.
Sponsored Key Club at Sierra Catholic High School.
Presented banners at the Oregon State Fair for FFA livestock showmanship.
Assisted in United Good Neighbors fund raising.
Held annual Strawberry Picking Contest beginning in 1965.
The club hosted a Golden Anniversary Dinner with 525 persons from seven clubs attending.
Gum machines were placed in public areas for additional income.

Annual bell ringing for the Salvation Army since 1966.
In 1967, the club played host to 96 children at the Kiwanis Day Football Game in Corvallis.
Conducted a Christmas Craft Sale of items made by Hillcrest and McClaren students.
Organized a new Boy Scout troop in East Salem in 1968.
Sponsored The Law and You in Junior High Schools in 1969.
Organized a Ladies of Kiwanians group
Sponsored 10 showings of Bigfoot, a movie on North America’s Abominable Snow Man.
Distributed Drug Awareness comic books to schools.
Chaperoned high school graduation party
Sponsored a baseball team.
Purchased film for United Good Neighbors.
Started Key Club at Salem Academy.
Church directories purchased for local motels.
Hosted Festival of Bands.
Improved water system at 4-H Center in 1971-1972.
Operated concession stand at State Fair to benefit Boys Club.
Started annual popcorn sales.
Korean Seed Project, planted trees with Sacheon Kiwanis Club in 1974-1975.
Provided television monitoring system for Pediatrics Ward at hospital.
Hosted 23 Japanese high school students.
Performed church yard work.
Assisted Red Cross with CPR Program.
First All City Spelling Bee.
Oregon Games for Physically Limited in 1977-1978
Kiwanis Track Meet
Purchased, assembled and erected creative playground equipment for Poyamaland in 1979-1980.
Coin Cake Project at State Fair in 1980-1981
Raised $5,500 for: Red Cross, YMCA, Boys Club and Shangri-La, and the club projects fund.
Christmas program for underprivileged children in 1981-1982.
Sponsored Junior Olympics, Kiwanis Track Meet.
County Commissioners Prayer Breakfast
Oregon Games for the Physically Limited.
Low-Rider Rally.
Assisted serving at Hospice Breakfast.
Constructed the Kiwanis Nursery Shop greenhouse at Shangri-La, along with three other clubs in 1983-1984. Won awards for this project from both Kiwanis International and the Pacific Northwest District.
Sponsored race to dedicate new bridge over the Willamette River in 1984-1985, with over 300 runners participating; $1,045 was raised.
Donated to the Mid-Valley Children’s Guild Equipment Project.
Began Educator of the Year Awards in 1985-1986.
Awards Presentation Luncheon with teachers and principals from each school was held.
Youth Skateboard Competition drew nearly 300 participants in 1987-1988.
Adopted Richmond Grade School starting 1989-1990.
Participated in Alzheimer’s Walk in 1990-1991.
